IORA Workshop on Development of a Regional Strategy to Address the Sustainable Management and Development of Fisheries Resources in the Indian Ocean Rim Region

Fisheries resources within the Indian Ocean region are critical to IORA Member States and therefore require joint management measures and actions such as harmonization of Policies and Legislations, MSC Strategies, joint surveillance, data collection, environmental monitoring, research on fisheries population dynamics, biodiversity, reproduction, genetics fish stock assessment, exchange of harvesting technologies, fish processing and marketing, information/data, socio-economic studies among others.



Member states of the IORA can establish a common platform, in collaboration with RFMOs that have information resulting from research works conducted in the map for research, socio-economic studies, preparation of management decisions and plans for sustainable fisheries conservation, development of management decisions and plans for sustainable fisheries conservation, development, utilization for enhancing food security, poverty alleviation and ensuring long term employment opportunities and income earning to the IORA Member States.


Objectives of the workshop:

  • To discuss the importance of developing coastal, Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) /deep sea and high seas fishing activities as a way of increasing employment  opportunities,  income and enhancing food security to lORA Member countries;
  • To increase   awareness   by sharing of   knowledge   and   information   regarding fisheries   conservation, management, development and rational utilization of fisheries resources in the coastal, EEZ / Deep Sea and high seas waters in lORA Member States
  • To discuss and identify gaps on sustainable conservation, management and utilization of coastal, EEZ / deep sea and high seas fisheries resources and agree on the ways of bridging capacity gaps particularly on combating IUU fishing and research;
  • To identify and prioritize projects and Development Partners that can be approached to provide both financial and technical support; and
  • To promote capacity Building Program for sustainable development of coastal, EEZ and high seas for Indian Ocean Rim Region.
